"13th" Documentary Discussion
Activism
2016
The 13th Amendment ended slavery in the United States. But though it was an important step towards freedom, the amendment also allowed for involuntary servitude if a person is convicted of a crime. This 2016 recorded discussion featured Michele Norris of the Aspen Institute’s Race Card Project, Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative, and Google's Senior Counsel of Human and Civil Rights Malika Saada Saar. The group discussed Ava DuVernay’s documentary, 13th, and the legacy and impact of the 13th Amendment’s involuntary servitude clause.
