“Am I Not a Woman and a Sister?”
Slavery
1838
This redesigned version of Wedgwood’s image called attention to enslaved women’s struggles.
In 1837, George Bourne published an anti-slavery book that focused on the treatment of enslaved women. Seeking to bring attention to sexual violence and oppression, his book featured Wedgwood’s image but with a female figure. The image was reproduced on copper tokens that were collected and displayed by abolitionists to call attention to enslaved women.
