Charles Frederick Heartman (1883-1953) was one of the world’s foremost antiquarians and experts in 18th and 19th century Americana. Heartman had begun collecting items as a teenager in Germany, where he wrote about rare books for German newspapers. Immigrating to America in 1911, he founded Heartman’s Historical Series, which compiled all manner of early American writings and provided ample bibliographic and biographical information. Heartman published A Bibliographical Checklist of American Negro Poetry (1916) and North American Negro Poets: a Bibliographical Checklist of Their Writings from 1760-1944 (1945). Both included Phillis Wheatley Peters.
