In The Migration Series, artist Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000) portrays the experiences of African Americans during the Great Migration. In 60 paintings, Lawrence explores themes of possibility and poverty, education and discrimination, that illustrate the struggle and triumph of being Black in America. The Museum of Modern Art’s One-Way Ticket exhibit takes visitors on an interactive journey through the series.
