Born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Katherine Johnson (1918–2020) was a mathematician whose calculations were crucial to NASA’s efforts to send astronauts into orbit and eventually the moon. Her lifelong work gained her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
