Movimento Negro Unifcado
Organizations
1978
The Movimento Negro Unificado supported Afro-Brazilians’ culture and rights.
During the 20th century, many social movements and organizations supported the rights, heritage, and freedoms of Afro-Brazilians. Movimento Negro Unifacado (MNU, United Black Movement), founded in 1978, emerged as one of Brazil’s most influential Black organizations.
An umbrella organization connecting grassroots groups across the country, MNU encouraged Afro-Brazilians to connect with their African roots and fight against racial discrimination. The organization supported protests across the nation and pushed for the creation of a National Black Consciousness Day.
