Simmons’ ironworks are part of a long tradition of Black craftsmanship.
Phillip Simmons (1912-2009) is considered the Dean of Charleston Blacksmithing. A native of Charles Island, South Carolina, Simmons was trained by renowned master blacksmith Peter Simmons. Phillip Simmons' work was both practical and beautiful – he created and repaired tools while also crafting ornate iron works. His artistry can still be seen today beautifying the Charleston landscape, as well as in museums - including the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Simmons work is part of the longstanding tradition of African American blacksmithing, craftsmanship and design, originating from Africa.
