Zun Lee’s photograph captures the American flag’s role in 21st-century protest.
Zun Lee is an award-winning visual artist who photographed protests in Ferguson, Missouri, in October 2014. Capturing a pivotal moment in the Black Lives Matter movement, Lee’s photo, part of a series called Black Love Matters, shows protesters marching from a vigil at the Canfield Green apartment complex to the Ferguson Police Department. Gathered together to protest the killing of Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer, a protester walks with the American flag held upside down, a symbol of distress, trouble, and danger that suggests something is amiss in America.
