Simone Brewster’s Negress Chaise Lounge
Design
2010
The chair’s legs are inspired by the Black female body.
Simone Brewster designed Negress as a chaise lounge, or an elongated chair that derives its name from the French term “chaise longue". The legs of the chaise are abstractions of the Black female body. In choosing to create a structure formed of disparate body parts, Brewster critiques the various ways that Black women’s bodies have historically provided support.
