2017
A leading voice for voting rights, Georgia lawyer and politician Stacey Abrams made history in 2018 as the first African American woman to become a major political party’s nominee for governor. Although she lost the election, she refused to concede to her Republican opponent, citing concerns about voter suppression. She went on to create Fair Fight Action, an organization that challenges discrimination against voters of color and promotes voter education. Her efforts to increase voter turnout in Georgia were credited with helping Democrats win the presidential and U.S. Senate elections in 2020 and 2021.
