The Ujamaa Cooperative views seeds as vessels of cultural heritage.
The $58 billion global seed market – in which patented GMO seeds are the dominant commodity – is controlled primarily by large corporations. However, small and independent seed growers are on the rise. Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance (UCFA) is working to increase diversity in farming and the seed industry. As a national collective of growers, UCFA cultivates and circulates heirloom seeds that are sold to growers and are used for food, healing, textiles, and landscaping.
